Shabbat Evening

SHABBAT EVENING SERVICES: OUR SCHEDULE AND…..
Beginning this year, we are happy to offer two different service times each month.

First and Second Friday of the Month: 7:15 pm – 8:30 pm
Third, Fourth, and Fifth Friday of the Month: 6:15 pm – 7:30 pm

SOME OFTEN ASKED QUESTIONS:

What if it is difficult for me to arrive at temple by 6:15 pm?
Not to worry.  A number of our members come to services directly from the end of their work day.  Please feel comfortable arriving any time after the service begins.  It is wonderful to see our sanctuary gradually fill as more and more people arrive to join their loved ones and friends for Shabbat.

What is the dress for Shabbat Evening Services?:
Dressy casual is perfectly fine for Shabbat.  Should, at the last minute, the spirit move you to come to services and you do not have time to change clothes, please do come as you are.  We want for you to be with us.

Oneg and Pre-Oneg:
On the nights when we begin at 7:15 pm our delicious oneg follows our service.  On the nights when we begin at 6:15 pm, we have a delicious “pre-oneg” beginning at 5:30 pm.  Our pre-oneg buffet features cheese, vegetables, fruit, crackers, and wine.  As well we are happy to offer something special for our children (usually bagel bites, cookies, and…).

Especially for Our Children During 6:15 pm Services:
About thirty minutes into the start of all of our 6:15 pm services, all children (ages 4-8) will be invited (if they wish to participate), to join with our Children’s Activities Coordinator for games, stories, and fun in one of our classrooms.  Families will reunite at the conclusion of our service.

What are services like?  Do I need to know Hebrew to appreciate the experience?
All of our services feature song, warmth, and spirit and are accessible to everyone. Our prayer book, “Mishkan T’filah” is transliterated for those who do not read Hebrew.  Our rabbis and cantor guide us through the service thoughtfully with explanations and teachings to ensure that everyone is sharing meaningfully.

How can I celebrate a life moment with a special blessing during services?
If you are interested in celebrating a life moment (birth, anniversary, special life change) with a blessing during our Shabbat services, please contact either Rabbi Perlman (
jperlman@tbsneedham.org) or Rabbi Markley (tmarkley@tbsneedham.org).

Is it possible to purchase my own copy of our prayer book “Mishkan T’filah”?
Of course.  To order your own copy of “Mishkan T’filah” (and/or a number of other Jewish books and resources) please go to
www.ccarnet.org.

SPECIAL SHABBAT SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

FIRST FRIDAY “SIMCHAT SHABBAT” SERVICE:
The first Friday of the month continues to feature our very popular TBS “Simchat Shabbat” – a spirited, music-filled service featuring our own Maple Street Project band, our wonderful Youth Choir, and the participation of the children in our TBS Mayim (K-5th grade) program.  While these services do involve families and children, they are inspirational for all ages!

TOT SHABBAT:
On the first Friday of the month, beginning at 6:15 pm, families with young childrenare invited to share in an age appropriate Shabbat service led by our very own Josh Shriber. Each Tot Shabbat service is filled with energy, family warmth, song, dance, and light. We enjoy a delicious treat after our service.

K/1st GRADE “KEHILLAH (“COMMUNITY”) KIDS” SHABBAT:
“Kehillah (“Community”) Kids Shabbat” is our NEW monthly kindergarten/1st grade family Shabbat service experience! Similar in format to our Tot Shabbat, this is a ‘next step’ service of singing, simple prayers, and stories. Led by Josh Shriber, “Kehillah Kids” will build upon the fun-filled “Tot Shabbat” experience. We conclude each service with a delicious sweet oneg.
2012-2013 Schedule:
From November through May, “Kehillah Kids” Shabbat (“Community Kids”) will be held on the second Friday of
the month, beginning at 6:15 pm in our sanctuary.

Josh Shriber: Our Tot Shabbat and “Kehillah Kids Shabbat” Leader:
Josh loves music and kids! Josh received his first guitar for his 13th birthday and began teaching himself from songbooks of his favorite musicians. In college, Josh started his first band —‘Suspect’ — which toured the east coast. After graduating from Wheaton College in 2000, Josh began giving piano and guitar lessons to support himself while playing in the band. His popularity as a teacher grew throughout his local towns of Newton and Wellesley, and thus, ‘Jammin’ With You!’ was born.  In 2005, Josh became a founding member of the kids rock band ‘Flooky and the  Beans,’ in which he performs regularly as guitar hero "Jojo Bean."

In addition to ‘Jammin’ with You!’ and ‘Flooky,’ Josh teaches Music and Movement classes every morning for children 1-5 years old.

BESTY UN-PLUGGED:
During the year, our senior (8th-12th grade) youth group, BESTY (Beth Shalom Temple Youth) will create and lead a special Shabbat evening of activities, song, prayer, and food for our entire TBS youth community (grades K-12).
