Professional Staff : Daniel Barkowitz - Executive Director   

Daniel Barkowitz joined the Temple Beth Shalom staff in 2011 as the Temple’s first Executive Director.  The role of Executive Director combines two of Daniel’s passions, a long-standing interest in finance developed during  twenty-year plus work history in the field of college financing, and a life-long passion for working in synagogue settings.  Daniel was most recently Dean of Financial Aid / Associate Dean of Student Affairs at Columbia University (previously he was Director of Financial Aid at MIT); he has also taught in religious education programs at several synagogues in the Boston area creating innovative teen education programs combining Jewish education with theater and other experiential education.  Daniel is a member of NATA, the National Association of Temple Administrators, and MATSA (the Massachusetts Association of Temple and Synagogue Administrators).

Daniel received his M.Ed. in Human Resource Education from Boston University and his B.Sc. in History from Northeastern University.  Daniel was born in the Panama Canal Zone where he lived until he was fourteen.  He then moved to South Carolina, where he attended Wando High School.  He has a passion for singing, reading, cooking, and raising his two beautiful daughters, Caroline and Rachel.  Daniel is married to Rebekah, and they live in Dedham, MA.


 Professional Staff : Allison Gutman - Director of Elementary Learning

Allison Gutman, Director of Elementary Learning, joined the Temple Beth Shalom team in 2011. Allison has been an educator and administrator at several New York City congregations, and is excited to bring her innovative ideas and great energy to our community. A graduate of the William Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education at the Jewish Theological Seminary, Allison is the recipient of a Masters Degree in Jewish Education focusing on synagogue education.

Allison received her undergraduate degree at Western Michigan University where she served as the President of the university’s Hillel chapter for two years. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Comparative Religion and Sociology. Allison has done additional studies at Columbia University, the University of Haifa, and Gratz College.

For the past three years, during her summers Allison has served as the Jewish Program Director for the JCC of Chicago’s Camp Chi. During that time Allison was participating in the JCC Chizuk Fellowship for Senior Jewish Educators. Allison is a proud alumnus of Kutz Camp and NFTY-MI where she served on the Regional Board. She served as a staff member and group leader for NFTY-MI and NFTY-NAR for several years. She has taught at numerous religious schools in Michigan and New York.

Allison and her husband Brian have recently moved to Lexington from New York City. They are enjoying getting to know their new community.



 Professional Staff : Ellen Dietrick - Director of Early Childhood Education

Ellen Dietrick holds a masters in education from the University of Virginia.  Before arriving at TBS she spent ten years directing the early childhood program at Congregation Beth Israel in Charlottesville, Virginia.  She is also the author of the children's book It's Israel's Birthday, featuring preschoolers on an imaginary journey to Israel.   Ellen represents TBS nationally as the advocacy chair on the board of the Early Childhood Educators of Reform Judaism.  As a Jim Joseph Leading Educators Online Fellow she is currently developing a community of practice to enable Jewish early childhood educators nationally to work and learn together online.  Ellen is also a graduate of the Covenant-JECEI Early Childhood Leadership Fellowship (2009) and the Covenant Fellowship for Early Childhood Leadership (2011).


 







Professional Staff : Sandra G. Hain - Temple Administrator

Sandy has been part of the TBS family, serving as Temple Administrator, since 1995. She has worked in administration and programming for not-for-profits for most of her life. Before she joined the Temple staff, she devoted eight years to working at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center for Aged (now Hebrew Senior Life), first as the Coordinator of the Women’s Auxiliary (where she met many wonderful Temple members) and then as the Assistant Director of Development. Sandy lived in Ramat Aviv, Israel for almost two years as a Temporary Immigrant, and worked at Bank Leumi as a Specialist in the International Customer Relations Department.

Sandy is a participant in MATSA and NATA, the local and national Temple Administrators Professional Groups and as well, in several local community organizations. She graduated from Boston University, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology, with a minor in Women’s Studies and a Master’s in Social Work, specializing in Task Oriented Groups. 



Professional Staff : Lauren Bohne - Director of Teen Learning

In addition to doing Hebrew intensive study at the University of California, Berkeley, Lauren Bohne developed her education skills at New School University where she received her degree in Psychology and Education. She has served on the senior staffs of the Union for Reform Judaism Crane Lake Camp in West Stockbridge, Massachusetts and at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. She has also taught in a number of synagogue schools over the course of her career. Lauren has a passion for experiential Jewish learning which she shared with North Shore Synagogue in Syosset, New York for three years as their Youth Director. There she not only oversaw their youth groups but also developed new curriculum and brought innovative teen leadership models to the community, blending the informal and formal elements of their programs into a more seamless whole. Most recently, Lauren served as a beloved member of the education team at Temple Israel of Hollywood where she created and led retreat programs and taught across several grade levels.
