Trip details:
We will be traveling through an organization called Etgar 36 which has been specializing in these Civil Rights tours for synagogues and Jewish teen groups for many years now (our TBS teens have traveled with them). We will explore not only the poignant history of the Civil Rights Movement but also the continuing legacy of slavery, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and mass incarceration today. The journey includes visits to the Rosa Parks Museum, the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and the Lynching Memorial, and the King Center among other highlights. We will attend Shabbat services at Montgomery’s Temple Beth Or, and Sunday morning services at MLK’s Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Dates: The trip will begin on Thursday, December 5, and will conclude on Sunday, December 8.
Trip Costs: The Civil Rights weekend includes all meals (beginning with Friday morning breakfast and ending with Sunday morning breakfast—in total 7 meals); all ground transportation, hotels, admission and programming costs. It does not include transportation to and from Atlanta.
If we have 20-24 travelers, the cost will be $1,275 per personIf we have 25-50 travelers, the cost will be $1,105 per person$250 additional for a single room; Discounts available for rooms of 3-4
Who can go on this trip? This trip has been designed for adults. If families are interested in traveling together, teens in grades 9 and up at the time of the trip are welcome when accompanied by a parent or guardian. (NOTE: Our 11th and 12th graders will have a similar opportunity to take this trip later in the year, so if you have a child in those grades, we’re happy to discuss the options with you.) We recommend a reasonable level of walking endurance to fully enjoy the experience.
Registration: If you are ready to register now, you can do so by clicking here. A deposit of $600 per person will be required at the time of registration. The balance will be due by the end of August and will be determined by the total number of people on the trip, as noted above.
.
Additional Learning Prep: We will be offering an adult learning course this fall on the history of Jewish involvement in the Civil Rights movement. It will be open to anyone in the community but will be particularly relevant for those planning to join us for this trip in December.
If you have questions, you can reach out to adultlearning@tbsneedham.org. We hope you can join us!
